3 Questions to Ask a Contractor Before Starting a Remodel

If you could remodel your home, what would you do to it?

The possibilities are endless when you remodel. And it’s much more economical than building a new home from scratch.

But before you get started, it’s essential to find the right contractor. You need someone who understands your project. And has experience in the field.

In this article, we’ll give you our top 3 questions to ask a contractor before you sign on the dotted line.

Before You Hire: Questions to Ask a Contractor

Every construction project is different. You want your contractor to be the right fit for your project. Here are a few questions you can ask to get a better feel for potential contractors.

1. Can I See Your Work?

Ask them for some examples of their work. Preferably, you want to see projects that are similar to yours. If you’re building a deck, you don’t want to hire a contractor who’s never built a deck!

Pictures of finished projects are great. But if you can, make a trip to see some projects in person. Then you can see the finishes and detail work and compare it to your plans.

Contractors often have a list of references. Call those references! And check their online reviews.

You can even request to see projects that are currently in process. This gives you a better idea of their cleanliness and safety standards on site.

2. What About Safety & Insurance?

There are certain safety guidelines that all contractors must follow. But it’s always a good idea to ask potential contractors to discuss their safety procedures before you start.

You want someone who cleans up the area and puts dangerous tools away when they’re done for the night. You also want your contractor to be mindful of your property’s safety. And ask who will oversee the construction site during the day.

Make sure they carry solid workers’ comp insurance in case an employee gets hurt on your property. And you want to see their general liability coverage. If something gets broken or damaged while they’re working, you don’t want to be the one who has to pay for it.

3. How Will We Communicate?

Communication is so important in any relationship. And that includes the relationship you have with your contractor.

Find out how often they give updates. If you want daily progress updates, make sure they’re aware of this and are willing to do that for you.

Also, find out how they like to communicate. If they prefer to send email updates, are you okay with that? Or do you prefer a phone call?

Hammering out these small details before you sign the contract helps you avoid conflicts with your contractor in the future.
